Goals and objectives of the programme

The NRP "antibiotic resistance" intends to focus on establishing scientific strategies and new methods applicable to a prospective system of resistance monitoring and on the analysis of the current situation concerning resistance in Switzerland, in all relevant areas (human and animal populations, agriculture, foodstuffs and the environment). The mobility of resistant bacteria or resistance genes and the resulting risk for future therapies will be evaluated. Molecular studies on the emergence of antibiotic resistance will provide new knowledge for the development of new antibiotics and new methods of in vitro detection. Furthermore, social, legal, ethical and economical consequences of the development of antibiotic resistance and a possible modification of rulings on the use of antibiotics will be gauged.

CHF 12 million will be made available over a 5-year period in order to accomplish this multidisciplinary task.

Projects

The research phase of NRP 49 began on 1st July 2001. Research work is underway in 21 research groups. The projects are grouped thematically into the following clusters:

A second call was issued on 24th July 2003. The start of research  is set for July 2004 and it must be completed by the end of June 2006, the conclusion of the research phase of the NRP Antibiotic Resistance.

Steering Committee

The Steering Committee is a small, flexible body, whose duties throughout the entire programme are predominantly strategic ones. It is in charge of the programme’s scientific quality and implementation. The Steering Committee is the formative body giving the programme its profile, and guaranteeing the necessary continuity and coherence in any decisions. The Steering Committee consists of six Members and a President.
